Anyone else feel like trying to live the literary life has been a tragic mistake, a childish holding on to an anachronistic ideal that leads to nowhere but circle of never ending, torturous introspection and loneliness?

You’d be lonely no matter what, that’s your lot in life. If it weren’t so you wouldn’t of found yourself trying to give your life meaning through literature in the first place.

this, when you're rejected by others your last refuge is to pretend you're better than they are.

I feel like this is always what it was. It was just a more relevant form of suffering when print culture was dominant.

this would have happened even if you didn't try to live a literary life

>> No.12618455

There is no literary life. If you have something you need to say, work your whole life until you are able to say it. This is the only thing you can mean when you say literary life.

Figure out where you're going. Shit or get off the pot.

the alternative is social normalcy, which in much of contempory society is more intolerable than total isolation

In order to live the literary lifestyle, one must suffer.

>trying to live the literary life
That's because the "lit life", as you perceive it, is nothing but a fantasy that can never be realized. It's a pile of claptrap, cobbled together dreamers, losers, and sycophants.
If you want to live a "literary life", you need to be teaching lit, be a literary critic, or work in the publishing industry (such state that it may be). Anything else, and you are just a poseur.
You need to integrate /lit/ into your lifestyle, just as you would any other aspect of your life, using it to enrich your existence. Gardeners garden, painters paint, sculptors sculpt; maybe not professionally, they do it because they love it, no matter how shitty their skill level may be.
Enjoy your literature, reading, and writing, anon. Use it for you, the way you like it. Use it to make yourself happy. Don't try to pigeonhole yourself into a meme.
All that introspection and loneliness is self imposed. You do that to yourself. Get over it. Get out of yourself. Get into life and live it, but take the /lit/ with you (sans the angst).

Must you live in a small rented room to live the literary lifestyle?

That IS the /lit/ life. Congrats, you achieved it. Now you understand why so many brilliant authors kill themselves.

Life is suffering and anguish no matter what you do, so you might as well suffer for something you think is worthwhile. Writing, to me, is just about the only worthwhile thing in the world. Everything else I do in my life has been adapted to facilitating my writing.

Correct. I've tried hedonism and, despite a brief reprieve, it leads to worse suffering.
