Because we live in an era where everything that has since been accepted as objective fact is being challenged, and nobody really knows what to believe anymore. Maybe I'm thinking about it too deeply, but it honestly feels like the foundation of truth is being rocked at the moment, and people are subconsciously losing it and turning to stuff like this book to keep them steady.

If that was really the case there wouldn't be a single non-schizophrenic person in America, and I'm not saying meme-schizophrenic, indecisive or aimless, I mean actual schizophrenic with delusions of demonic voices talking in your head.

In reality it's more a consequence of the spread of inormation and communication technologies. Too much (apparently) contradictory informations, too fast for really clear-headed processing, actual make the decision process muddier and more difficult. It isn't really all that suprising and it started way before the 80s, only we're reaching very high levels of it now.
