>> No.12613392

who is a good post-modern horror author?

>> No.12613393

>>12613258
The modern kafka. Tell me the office story isn't directly influenced by kafka. Also the factory with multiple floors is a patrician story.

Thomas Ligotti is the best you are going to get.

>> No.12613554

Yeah ligotti kind of sucks, he does atmosphere okay but shitty endings
>>12613392
Clive Barker is the best modern horror. Weaveworld, Imajica, Books of Blood

>> No.12613995

What do you mean? Don't you like it?
Not even Gas Station Carnivals?

>>12613393
>Tell me the office story isn't directly influenced by kafka
What story are you talking about? Tell me the name.

>> No.12614082

I liked it enough I guess, but it just reminded me of Goosebumps. I thought it was going to be some twisted cosmic Lovecraft shit but it was just Goosebumps.

>Not even Gas Station Carnivals?

Literally a Goosebumps story.

Barker's modern work is self-indulgent dogshit though, I read Hellbound Heart and then Scarlet Gospels, and the drop in quality is dramatic.

>> No.12614441

Sometimes his style is so overwrought it interferes with the horror, he's at his best when it's a bit toned down (The Chymist, Nethescurial, Alice's Last Adventure)

>> No.12615320

What about "The Clown Puppet"? Weren't you not even a little afraid? Don't you looked at your back not even once?

>I thought it was going to be some twisted cosmic Lovecraft shit
It will sound like blasfemy around horror fans but I don't like Lovecraft I've already read the call of cthulhu and I didn't like it. Maybe I just don't get him, dunno.

>> No.12615388

He is hilariously bad, I genuinely think Stephen King is better at writing horror I don't understand the hype for that depressed faggot

>> No.12615410

>>12614441
I can't deal with his lack of narrative, there's no structure, no climax, nothing, It's all the same atmospheric porn, every protagonists has the same basic characteristics, I want to like Ligotti but I just can't.

>I want to like Ligotti but I just can't.
I thought the same thing. It's just not very good. Lots of recommendations about this guy but now I'm starting to realize I should never listen to you people.

It doesn't help that his post Noctuary stuff is so fucking try hard, it's like he overdosed on early black pills after binge reading a bunch of Vampire The Masquerade shit.

>> No.12615751

>>12613995
My Case for Retributive Action is the one I was referring to. Now that I think more, Our Temporary Supervisor fits the bill as well.

>>12614082
How is "The Red Tower" not a twisted lovecraft story? If you want scary tentacle monsters specifically watch some hentai faggot.

>> No.12615761

>>12615410
Modern day kafka.

>> No.12615780

>>12615410
His stories are highly structured, all surface, self-aware but only slightly pomo. If you like King, Barker, Gaiman or such, Tl is not for you.

>> No.12615876

>>12614410
Yeah its really just those two novels and the short stories that are good imo. The Great and Secret Show sucked and so the The Damnation Game. Three books isn't bad though considering no one else has anything in decades. House of Leaves is only half good. He also had a stroke and I think his past book before that wad some story about sailboats and having AIDs. I guess his "kids" books The Thief of Always and Abarat are good.

>> No.12615951

>>12613554
Wtf, anon. Barker wrote some good stuff in the 80s but Ligotti is far better.

God you're lame.
