It's possible to live without having read a single sentence from any Greek authors, but what about English philosophers, novelists, and poets? You could read Hobbes' Leviathan without ever touching Aristotle's Politics, or Shakespeare's Hamlet without encountering Aeschylus' Oresteia. You honestly wouldn't be losing out on much by reading anything by Dickens, Thackeray, or Hardy without knowing of the development of prose fiction and archetypes in literature prior to them.
