Have you ever bought a book because it looked cool?

Yes. Tutuola isn't among those books though, because those covers are hideous. Still bought most of his stories.

Is he better than Achebe?

I think it looks cool, like a Camus cover with color.

Oh, also, is he any good? I look forward to reading The Palm Wine Drinkard, I saw it recommended in some thread and thought it looked cool. Any other reccs?

In my opinion, no. But I haven't read through all of their books.

>>12595403
Fair enough. I like the older covers to his books more, they have more of a "bookish" feel to them.

>>12595404
They're weird, all these Yoruba folk tales. They're mostly like this:

>protagonist tries fo fix something
>encounters weird beings/gods
>protagonist takes some juju
>protagonist saves the day
>rinse and repeat

Easy reading, reads like someone telling you these stories, though they're all weird and crazy.

Oh, and if it's more african lit you're after, I recommend a book called "The wizard of the crow", which was quite good. Not by Tutola though.

Yes, every book. I only buy books and read them because I believe it gives me a cool intellectual image, I don't remember most of what I read.

Sure, I bought this as a kid (not this particular cover). Also happened to be a great book, but I didn't know any better at the time.

Why does amazon always have the ugliest covers for books? I’m tempted to buy pic related from a different website and wait way longer just to get it with this cover.

you're not giving tutola enough credit for the sheer weirdness of his books. the english is very plain but nigerian so the grammar is slightly strange (though accurate). the prose matter-of-factly describes bizarre scenes rife with ghosts and mutilations and menacing forest and towns and marching infant armies like they're the most normal things in the world. basically lovecraft if instead of using flowery language to indicate indescribable horror he wrote about said horror in plain, straightforward language and with a certain cheerful nonchalantness
