It's a short text that is all about following your guts vs social expectations. It was very influential in north american lit specially because it was a call for relying on yourself and developing your own voice instead of following the ways of the old (as in expressing your own experience as an "american" other than following the expectations/standards of an euro-centric culture).

In the end "going out and trying your luck" is pretty much following your guts vs being afraid of what people will think/conforming to that kind of standard, so I think this is very related.
