Was this his magnum opus? I see Siddhartha discussed here with relative frequency, but Narcissus and Goldmund is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of thematic expression and general quality and coherence. Thoughts?

Herman Hesse isn’t very appreciated around these parts. I suggest you go from whence you came.

Narziss und Goldmund is definetly one of his superior works that gets too often overlooked and it’s his best Bildungsroman with Das Glasperlenspiel.
It doesn’t compare to any of the greatest pieces of literature though; it’s only Hesse after all.

I never really understood the distaste for Hesse around here. Do Siddhartha and Steppenwolf rub readers the wrong way somehow? I really think Demian and N&G should be encouraged more. Still have to read Glass Bead Game...

I think his message is seen as utopian but aimless and his books as shallow. Along with writers like Kerouac he helped set the stage for hippy culture and post-50s hedonism, which is disliked here.

Hesse wrote some beautiful stuff though, and N&G is a very good book, especially for younger readers. Better than Demian and Siddhartha imo.
