depends. reading a digital book can be impractical if all the notes are in the back, for example. personally I never buy physical books if I can avoid it (I have too many as it is...)

There's no such thing as waste, only disorder. Trash and refuse, even, have a use - they will be broken down and consumed by the earth or insects, or potentially be recycled in the case of plastics. The problem is when trash is in the wrong place - disordered. For a middle class family in a 2000 square foot house, having thousands of books would be disorderly. In a mansion, tens of thousands of books could be housed elegantly.
