i'm not much of a literary analyst, but i don't think the sense of individualism that werther has is positive in any sense. even if we remove his suicide from the book, the passages where he attempts to integrate into the court world and move past the chick (don't remember her name sorry) are manifestations of his individualism, and have undeniably ugly results for him.
it seems like werther reflects the pattern of individualism as a type of behavior or mindset where one is simply unable to coexist with others, rather than choosing not to.
