Here's a snip from what I'm working on now, which is itself a prelude to another larger story. Originally spurred from a prompt for something else, I spent some time just letting the setting and plot germinate in my mind and it sort of grew to occupy its own place in there. I started writing this story to help break what is unarguably one of the worst blocks I've ever experienced. I've never written in third-person, present tense before, so I want to try that before settling on a style for the next story. I've learned we're just wired for past tense, present tense just doesn't flow as organically. I like the exercise, but it's countervailing the effort of breaking the block.

In keeping with the limited scope the reader has, I like to place elements and objects around story that convey a sense of scale through impromptu searches. For instance, one might be wondering exactly how far out into deep space Cygnine is; googling the stellar object mentioned in the first line will show that it actually exists and it's roughly 20,000 light years away from earth.

Now is not the time for fear; that comes later. I want to explore what a character, a young woman, might experience in a desperate survival situation entirely alone. Her worst enemy will be space and its effect on her psyche. I'm baking this raptor omelette with some intentionally dark themes, or so I hope anyway. I want to write her as having a very authoritative and controlling but protective personality (what better than a space cop?). She also feels that the life she's lived is inadequate. When facing her pale reflection through a window and peering into that inky, twinkling expanse, I want to write this girl as absolutely tortured by her mortality and loss of control over her situation. That, too, comes later.

That's the criticism I need. That first block is much more flowery than that conveyed in the story's proceedings. I've had some success with openings that are overwrought before. I like to approach the setting like a blank canvas and try to paint it so that it's vivid in the mind's eye. But maybe that isn't working here.

Thanks, you're spot-on with that observation. I wrote the station to be closer originally, but felt that seemed illogical if she's been sent there to deal with pirates or a violent mutiny. Besides, she has equipment that can get her face-to-face with the site, in a manner of speaking. Looking at it, I don't think I conveyed the scale of that space station well. By this point, she already has drones combing its lower levels. I'll edit that appropriately.

Edited. As to the optic anatomy, picrelated. I created her, but I didn't invent birds. Her eyes are essentially large, blue orbs with pupils that dilate and contract depending on her mood or what she's looking at.

Letters or words? I do editing in irl life for businesses, I just like to ask other writers for critique. When home after writing and amending corporate/marketing schlock all day, it's nice to be able to remind myself that I can still paint pretty vistas and landscapes with words. This story is still just a draft, I haven't gotten to revising it yet. I'm just writing it for my own amusement.

I actually understand where you're coming from; I just wasn't actually planning to incorporate smut into this particular story. I'm reeeeeally on the fence with writing smut into it. This character is alone most of her life in space (that changes, though not in this story), She definitely has sexual urges as any man or woman her age. She IS a chronic masturbator... I could write a wank into it before she boards the mining facility. I like that, I haven't written masturbation before. I haven't asked this outside of the corner of 5chenz where I share these kinds of stories; yes or no to cloaca masturbation? I'm assuming we're all /d/egens here, but I can understand space raptor puss may not hold the allure that space cat puss does.

Please fix everything. "The pocked well beneath her right foot is profoundly larger than that on the left"? Give me a break. Just write in English, doc, not this tryhard pseud SAT vocabulary shit. "The rut under her right foot is deeper than the other." Something like that would be much better. "Profoundly larger" in particular is an abomination of a phrase; you're hereby banned from using adverbs. "Her vexations waxing"? Better "Growing confused." Be simple and clear. "As she pores over images that elicit more questions than the facile presumptions she held" makes me want to puke, just say "as she studies the images that raise more questions than they answer." Is this cliche, an overused phrase? Probably, but so is what you already have, and you commit the additional sin of trying to cover it up by using a thesaurus (not that you actually used a thesaurus, but you certainly are using more unusual words for their own sake).
