this and Life and Fate. If you want a metaphorical take on the Soviet project and its disastrous result then Pelevin's Foundation Pit is a good pick. His earlier work Chevengur is also metaphorical but based in the civil war period, with an emphasis on the lawless violence of the era. If you want nonfiction then you can look at a bunch of different surveys of Soviet history, and there is more focused literature on the Gulag and Stalinism if that's what you're interested in. I can post recs for those if you want but I'll have to refer to a list because I can't remember all the names off the top of my head.
