Help me out, /lit/.

I've been thinking of getting this for a few years now, but have never been able to decide if it is worth the price. Would you recommend the entire series for $25 US?

>> No.1250522

The BBC radio show is much better than the actual books are, download it or find the LP at a yard sale for less than 5 dollar. Spend the other 20 on an your favourite intoxicant.

>> No.1250530

Don't ever listen to a British person when they tell you something on the BBC is better than things not on BBC.
Get the books.
The BBC version is not better.
British people are a strange backward Island people but somehow Douglas Adams wrote some really funny not-backward books. He's probably the exception.

In fairness this is what the guide would tell you to do.

Personally i liked the first few books and I've picked up afew copies over the years including a big and fancy omnibus like that one. Never been able to read through. The individual books read alot better if you ask me.

You realise that the Radio Series was the original Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and almost all of Douglas Adams works where owned to some degree by the BBC, certainly written for them.

>> No.1250534

Why would you buy that, OP? The first two books are the only good ones. Third is okay, and the last two are dreadful.

I'm not even British, if you have any love for Douglas Adams' humour and you've had the chance to compare, you'd know the radio show is a better medium and a better realisation of it.

Why is there no version of HGTTG that doesn't have a horrible cover?

I mean, is that green ball a planet, or what? Jesus fuck, they could do so much, and every time, they just don't bother.

The american publications have that annoying green thing on them some of the European copies are great. My favourite cover is the one divided in four photos with tea cups and the like. So u can jumble the books around and make different combinations. You know, if you had too much time on your hands.

You're clearly a British subject, whether you're in Britain proper or in one of the colonies. British through and through, or at least owned and downtrodden by the British monarchy. You clearly aren't a free member of the Democratic Republic of the United States of America.

>>1250532
Your point being?

OP-I probably wouldn't buy this giant ass volume because this is the sort of thing I'd read on the subway and I'd want to put the books into my pocket. It's also difficult to carry this and your towel at the same time.

You now realise that dispite how hard you're trying to sound clever, your point is nothing other than 'don't listen to British people'

Does that really sound like something anyone other than a complete fool would say?

I enjoy your reply accusing me of being a European whose words have no value.

Sage for not on topic.

>> No.1250556

OP here.

How about less insulting of british people and putting down of said flat jokes and more telling me what i should and shouldn't buy?

>> No.1250559

>>1250552

Well yeah, not listening to British people would be the first step. And if you got the BBC radio version you'd have to listen to lots and lots of British people. They would be talking at you with their accents and their ou for color and ou for favorite, all those extra vowels...eugh!
And then you might get infected with the dreaded British humour (!) is superiour to all outher humour plague. It has hurt many a non-British, basically made them a pariah in their own communities. Outcasts. And then they're forced to attend showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show for socialization.
The whole thing is too frightening.

douglas adams was a pretty froopy drood. he always knew where his towel was and doesn't afraid of anything.

>> No.1250577

don't forget to read dirk gently's holistic detective agency by douglas adams

or douglas adams favorite book of his own and the least read: Last Chance to See. last chance to see is a non fiction but quite funny and it deals with adams himself travelling the world to look at endangered animals before they go extinct and make fun of them and such with his typical wit. one of my fav parts was when he was trying to find a condom to go over the microphone to stick into the river to find river dolphins in china, but nobody in china at the time really used condoms and they kept pointing him at birth control pills and giving him "you're a retard" looks. that species of dolphin recently went extinct so adams totally called that one.

in regards to that picture. reading the bible or the koran instead of any other book is like eating donuts and twinkies in place of a real meal.

better to read nothing then religious hogwash propaganda bullshit.

but then again multiple surveys have been done and it turns out that there are more athesists and agnostics that have read the bible then actual religious people. seems actually reading it alerts some people to how fucking retarded it is.

Also the HHG books are great and you'll finish all of them in like a week.

But religious beliefs dictate and influence the way everyone lives in turn (abortion, anti-gay laws etc.). Isn't it worse to let people believe these backwards-ass ideas and allow them to impede progress?
