Pic related. The first six were passably good, and then this one took a massive shit on everything that the previous books did well. Plus it had the laziest, most self-fellating ending I've ever read.

I wholeheartedly agree with the "Very Short Introduction" series being absolute trash. I had a professor in college require one as textbook for class (among many others of similar "quality"). I think that one was the only book i ever purposefully destroyed after reading.

>>12501593
It depends entirely on the subject some are better then others. The VSI to Post-Structuralism was pretty damn good imo. Explained everything I needed to know for Derrida in less then 150 pages.

What would've been a satisfying ending in your opinion anon? I don't know if you read the series in rapid succession, but it take him over 30 years to complete it, which may account for the ending being the way it was.

The whole world should have been a post-apocalyptic version of Earth. That's what it seemed like in the earlier books with stuff from Earth like a Nazi plane and Jesus existing, and it felt lazy for King to just explain it as his in-book self writing those into the world through his consciousness. As for the ending itself, the Crimson King was just ridiculous, and so was the artist who drew him and then erased him. Neither should have been in there. The Tower itself should have had more meaning to Roland. There are a few ways King could have achieved this but something that either let him talk to his dead friends would have been good. Basically any ending that gave the Tower meaning would have been good. As it is, Roland has traveled to the Tower over and over again for god knows how many cycles, only for it to ultimately mean nothing. Going into it I knew how long it took him to write and it's pretty clear that up until the end he didn't know what the Tower actually was, and the cyclical ending just felt like a lazy cop-out since he didn't feel like coming up with a better ending.

I feel like by the end, King just wanted it to be done and by that time, he had already made it so meta, and included the parallel world stuff, that I guess he figured that any other straightforward ending would be underwhelming, which I think he did admit to in the author's note before the final chapter. I dunno, I was glad he finally finished the fucking thing, since I jumped into the series as a teen when it was only on book 3, and wasn't sure if it was ever gonna be finished.

You make me happy OP, since someone I dislike recommended Blackburn's Ethics to me. Good thing I didn't mind.

Pic related, I couldn't read the whole first page and started to wonder who was the retarded kid who translated the novel. Sentences were terrible indeed. Then I realized it was the author's native language.

Not that anon either, but I could have said Invention of Morel too. The only other argentinian book I read (apart from some Borges but that was too long ago) was The Tunnel by Sabato, which I found significantly better (though not a masterpiece).
It's true that the Invention of Morel has good reviews and you should probably read it anyway to make up your mind. It's not long at all.
