George Orwell was a socialist that opposed totalitarianism (he also frequently disagreed with himself on his standing, thinking socialism could lead directly to totalitarianism) but yeah I’d suggest his other book 1984. One of my favorites, it’s quite the story.

OP you'll enjoy Solzhenitsyn. I'm not a Petersonfag but I think he was right in saying Solz was "not the least" of the factors which led to the USSR's demise.
Start with Ivan Denisovich then read Gulag Archipelago. Cancer Ward isn't really essential reading, but it's one of my favorite novels.

There isn't much actually. Most people will post fash or capitalist books.

The only two I know of which are not like that are Shafarevich's The Socialist Phenomenon and Whittaker Chambers's 'The Witness'. The former is very philosophical, however it explains proto-socialist movements in history that you'll never hear about. The latter is more of a personal memoir of this guy who explains how fucked up his life was and why people like him become socialists. Ronald Reagan credited it to the reason why he turned from Democrat to Republican.
