In 20 years conde naste wont even exist, or if they do it will be in a much different capacity than they do now. Pitchfork in particular has been doomed since even before the buyout and it is likely that they will be one of their earliest properties to go under. As >>12484207 rightly points out this is the majority opinion of Pitchfork now especially among people closer to the Gen Z age range and for good reason. People like to joke that Pitchfork was never good, but for their earlier years I think it can be argued that they at least were the most interesting thing going in music journalism (or at least the most interesting thing with any traction). However, in recent years there is pretty much no arguing that they are anything other than absolute trash especially after the buyout and the major layoffs that came just a few years later. Conde is very quickly learning that Pitchfork is not a cash positive enterprise and are trying desperately to trim whatever fat they can, so get ready for an even worse Pitchfork with a minuscule full time staff and all of the content on the website being written by sub 100 IQ retarded unpaid interns until it finally gets the axe.

Music journalism is a ridiculous concept in the age of the internet. or just internet digging on your own (rym for instance has a chart for essentially any genre you can imagine)
There is a legitimate downside to all of this though, there are many albums which were not even that obscure in their day that are all but forgotten now or are quickly going that way. It's too easy just to say "lol cause they're bad obviously" or "well they just weren't important", but often this isn't exactly the case. I can't tell you how many albums there are posted on places like /mu/ or just in the public consciousness in any capacity purely because the were mentioned by a relatively popular critic or reviewer whereas other albums that where just as good and well circulated are totally passed over. With the addition of algorithmicly selected music this problem is exacerbated immensely to the point where only the top 1% of music is even known to exist (and I'm not talking about the average person here, I mean that even people hugely invested in learning about this stuff have almost no avenues with which to obtain this information) leading to people who think they have a complete understanding of pop music history because they've listened to the top 10 or so best selling "independent" records to come out over the last 50 years and it is more or less impossible for them to find out for themselves how hopelessly misinformed they are without someone older than them beating them over the head. This is more than simple Dunning-Kruger type overconfidence kids on the internet these days have very few resources to obtain this info. In the past this was hugely mitigated by both record stores and magazines. Record stores offered a real dialog with someone involved in the developing history of what was happening now as well as what they grew up with and could give you things like "If you like this you should check this out as well". The crucial difference between when a record store clerk does this versus when a computer does this is that the clerk has the added input of real human taste and experience, thus each person going to each record store gets a unique and valid understanding of what came before them so that even if it lacks completeness the vast amount of people and the differences between them pretty much cover everything. An algorithm only accelerates this process of historical reduction by prompting people to listen to only what other people are already listening to so that everyone ends up listening to a smaller and smaller pool of the same stuff whereas personal recommendations served as a bulwark against this. Critics are of course only curation and lack any one on one interaction but at least they existed as people with real human experience/knowledge that they could offer the next generation. So even though that I agree that they mostly sucked I am still a little sad to see them go.

>> No.12484437

>>12484428
(cont) Especially along with the disappearance of the type of people who would collect absolutely every record that came out in a time and place (as this is pretty much impossible with the amount of music coming out now), anyone who at all cares about the history of "underground"/"independent" music going forward should be really worried t b h. There are already massive distortions happening that no one is even aware of and it is only going to happen faster and more drastically in the future.

yeah, that's exactly what i mean by curated playlists - as a replica of the record store dialogue. i'm pretty ignorant of what pitchfork and the like have to offer desu. i find the majority of my music through the recommendations of bands i like, as well as dedicated music fans. it's a shame algorithms aren't currently more finely tuned.

>> No.12484516

I'm not sure how curated playlists (assuming you mean curation by humans) is functionally any different from the critic which are in essence just curation with the addition of critique (at least bad journalism, good journalism will contain the cultural and historical context of the music considering that just saying that you think a song is good or bad doesn't really need any further extrapolation than a rating out of ten) and honestly I think that as algorithms get better it will only make this problem worse as they will only be further from the type of dialog in record stores (ie record store clerks were very often "wrong" in that your taste and the recommendation had nothing explicitly relating them but you enjoyed the music regardless). I think I might be misunderstanding you though, lemme know if I'm understanding what you're getting at or if I totally butchered your point with my 0/10 reading comprehension lol

>> No.12484600

i guess by curated playlists i mean the sharing and exploration of tastes ie music linked together by an individual rather than sub genre etc. if you're both fans of similar bands perhaps you'll be inclined to listen to the outliers in their taste. current algorithms may analyse these couple of (lesser known) bands as an anomaly among someones taste and not recommend it to the listener as that doesn't seem to be what they're designed to do? i could be wrong and this does exist in some form, i'm not really that woke on all the methods of discovering music/music journalism.

Marijuana amplifies emotion. Don't smoke when you are anxious. Simple.

No. They lack the discipline that is required to truly follow the spiritual path most likely will just spend their entire lives smoking pot and following the surface level understanding of eastern spirituality that they have. Even if they try following it seriously it will be a western influenced movement corrupted by crypto-materialism.

I took some eastern spirituality class in college because it fulfilled an elective credit and some of my classmates were obnoxious kids like this. I remember this skinny, light-skinned black girl with dreads explaining to her friend how she was using the Jain meditiation breathing techniques while holding in her blunt smoke.

Also after I fell for the meme and went backpacking in europe hostels were filled with autistic people like this who sat around playing the same song on the communal acoustic guitar and hoping some girl with hairy armpits would walk by.

>spiritual path
>thoth goes to psytrance fest in some third world country, takes shit loads of drugs, and rails shitloads of dark skinned, foreign men, and pretends she's spiritual. Tantric.
>an absolute bitch back home. No respect for coworkers, Goes at the littlest things. Can't control herself during PMS. Compassion? What is it? No quieting of discordant states of mind. No metta. No friendliness. No nothing.

If you're """"spiritual'"" in 3d world countries or for five minutes while meditating, then you're on a journey to nowhere, or propably to deeper egocentrism than you started with, because this kind of thinking masks a serious spiritual materialism.
If the bitch can't remain equanimous to a homeless person, or an ugly white male, without experiencing anxiety, anger, or disgust, then she could be considered as really working on the path. Somehow, I doubt that whore had even the littlest modicum of self control.
