Is joining the Navy the most /lit/ foundation? Think about it: time away at sea, a room of your own, discipline, money to keep you safe at home.

Many writers served during wars. Why is military service so divorced from the creative world these days?

>> No.12477018

Writers served in the military because they had to by law. If you were seen as worthless you were sent off to war, which most artists are.

Sorry, /lit/ doesn’t associate with the vain gods of material and flesh. Mammon is of no concern to True Intellectuals. To be /lit/ is to be in poverty, in a constant struggle of life, living within the border of death (the first death, that is)

which navy? because while having a loose butthole is pretty lit the "navy experience" will probably make you retarded if you're not already.

t. served 8 years in the air force.

in today's world, overloaded with information and knowledge, war hasn't the same meaning as before, hence the separation between military service to the creative world

World War II was an exceptional occurrence. Art belongs to the left and leftist are pacifist. There's nothing /lit/ in being a soldier.

right, that’s why they took over Russia, invaded Poland, invaded Hungary, and gave military aid to leftist political parties in Spain, Germany, China, Korea, Cuba, and Vietnam.

World War II was beautiful, a true revolution against that which was to become the modern world, a true conflict between good and evils

Jack Vance started writing when he was a merchant sailor. The sea life, naval or merchant, is not for everyone. You could try it and see!

Actual current sailor here

>Time away at sea
Work twelve hour days seven days a week for God knows how long. When you get off work you're too tired to do much of anything.
>Room of your own
I live in the barracks. My living space when not on a ship is one room that is smaller than my old bedroom at my parents' house, I have to share it with another guy, I have no kitchen (a fridge and microwave do not count), and I can be randomly inspected to see if I'm making my bed and other random shit. On the ship, I have a very, very small rack and can hear a dozen other dudes jerking it. It smells like ass.
>Discipline
The drunken sailor stereotype is very true and motherfuckers are always getting in trouble. Last deployment, the night before we pulled into the Philippines the XO of the ship got on the loudspeaker and said a bunch of people had their Internet privileges pulled for trying to organize meetings with prostitutes. I have been at my current command for a little under two years now, and have seen half a dozen people get in trouble for drugs, mostly cocaine.
>Money
I am so fucking broke.

How the hell are you broke? What even are your living expenses besides the twice-weekly can of dip? What on earth are you spending your money on?

Decent food, alcohol, books. I make roughly $2000 a month.

Because there was a time when conscription happened and ex-draftees would return from a combat theater to write books if they survived.
