Why should you learn new languages just to read literature if you're over 25? Like aren't you going to be a worse translator than someone who knew the language their whole life and has the skills to translate the book?

learning languges is incredibly satisfying
it may be autism but i love even just doing grammar exercises. and when you pick up some text and can actually make out what's being said it feels like magic somehow, the strangeness of language becomes very pronounced when the random gibberish starts producing little cascades of meaning in your head

Learning a langauge also means learning the culture. You understand the author better if you know where he's coming from culturally.
It's very difficult to translate that.

no because if you really know the language you dont have to translate it

Why should I be concerned with whether or not someone is better than me at something. If I want to do something, I do it. If you want to kick a football, do you avoid it because there are better football players than you?

Are you seriously trying to tell me when you learned a foreign language that
1) You didn’t learn the words as translations or the equivalents in your native tongue
And/or
2) Objects were presented to you and you were only told their name in the language and that you never once connected them with the equivalent in your native tongue
Sorry but you’re lying

No, I avoid it because its an arbitrary corruption of the elegant rules of Rugby.
