The Expanse is probably what you're looking for.

The first novel is top tier, and it sets up a really engaging world so the weaker points in some of the later books aren't deal breakers. Great characters, it nails that hard(er) scifi take on things and is overall pretty believable.

>>12469046
Yeah it's a really fun read, the pace keeps up and the characters and world are engaging. It's just really fucking satisfying to read. Can't recommend it enough. Definitely not a waste of time if you're looking for an easy enjoyable read.

Pic related. Read at maybe 9, 10 yo. Relatively standard kid fantasy, but with enough interesting ideas to keep it fresh.
Re-read it maybe 2 years ago to see if it withstood the test of time and age. It did, so yeah, I'll recommend it.

I'm writing a low-fantasy novel. There's two powers who have been at war for hundreds of years, and it's not a good-versus-evil case. Both of them have done dickhole-ish things and committed war crimes over that time, but they're also not necessarily bad. Morally grey.
So problem is I need to decide now why they were fighting in the first place. It's just background information to my main story, but it's time. It's more like they exist, therefore they fight, but I'm looking for a more satisfactory way to explain that. What do you guys think?
/his/torically speaking, wars tend to be over resources/territory, over egos, or due to some spark like the rebellion of a minor territory or the assassination of some diplomat.

So here's my recommendation to point that not all >fememe authors are complete shit.

Fun book. Urban fantasy. The kind you can give to your young brother to read without thinking you are killing his neurons or brainwashing him into a degenerate. So, basically, dragons are total jerks. They are complete normalfags and should just fuck off and die and the world would be better off.

I just finished book 2 and it's about the same quality, although the qt female thaumaturge is being increasingly mary suey, and the author likes to remember the reader every other chapter how amazing she is. Other than that, still nice book.

Black future month is very preachy, and I actually agree with her politics. There are several paragraphs long diatribes that are basically just political declarations. I'm fine with political stuff but show it through characters and actions not by talking at the reader.

Fifth Season is very good. Read those. Yeah, it's about racism and colonialism and motherhood, but it reads like a fantasy adventure novel and not like an angry blog post.

How comparable is Mistborne and the Stormlight Archive to Elantris?
I just finished Elantris, and it is awful, but I still don't know whether to plunge into Mistborne and Stormlight.
I understand that Elantris is the guy's first novel, but is Mistborne and Stormlight really that much better and different? People keep telling me to read Stormlight because it's a "mark in fantasy history" and "comparable to Tolkien and Lord of the Rings" and it far outclasses all other modern fantasy books.

I can't comment on how it stacks up to his previous works, as I haven't read those, but you should probably disregard those people. I love Stormlight. It's high fantasy with an incredibly well thought out world and a nice set of characters. Mostly. It's not comparable to Tolkien, and it's not a mark in fantasy history yet. The books are long reads, and Sanderson tends to slowly build towards a single finale which means the earlier parts tend to drag. This is all fine to me, as I enjoy those parts, but especially during the first book this could be off-putting. Saying it far outclasses other books is personal preference of course, but I wouldn't go nearly that far. It has it's strenghts, but also it's obvious shortcomings, and where it might beat other books in one department it'll lose in the next.

In terms of craft -which is what is relevant when discussing sanderson- mistborn is far better than elantris, and stormlight is much more ambitious and detailed than mistborn.
So the question is what you disliked in Elantris. Mistborn and Stormlight are the same writing principles, but done much, much better. Sanderson is a writer of the structure, not of the style. So if that's what you disliked in elantris, you won't like the rest.
Still worth checking out just in case tho. Mistborn isn't that long.

Are you retarded? Vampirism is a curse. You get rad powers but you're still basically vilified by civilization, bombarded with arbitrary restrictions, forced to use people as cattle (which backfires into the whole vilified bit), and, assuming it's a judeo-christian setting, damned for eternity after you get cucked out of physical existence.

You read the beat of Clarke. Bone if it is as good as childhood's end. 2001 and rama are both pretty good for the first novels and then each sequel is progressively worse and less necessary to the series. However I've only read the first foundation novel and a lot of nonfiction from Asimov so I cant really compere the two. He did wonders for my understanding of physics though.
