What do you think of Persuasion and Rethoric?

For those who haven't heard of the book, from I think I understand so far, the author believe in the existence of some inherently human truths that are repeated throughout history, in order to move popular thought to a more pleasant existence, although ignoring what lies at the very core of it; this is done through Rhetoric, used very much like the early (pre-socratics) Greeks did; Persuasion on the other hand, seems to be the point in which thoughts are one with the being, which means the "will"/"want to" of the being has been nullified or reached a still point (which sounds like a buddhist thought).

I started recently and it seems alright. I still feel the preface of the book I own is over-glorifying the author.
