While Houellebecq's first works offered a lucid, objective, disenchanted, sometimes poignant vision of the planned love disaster of our lives, Serotoninfalls into what must be called the popular sentimental molasses, the sentiment of love which overthrows everything, which constitutes, it is several times repeated in the novel, the only real goal assignable to existence. Houellebecq, and it is here that one must be subtle, Houellebecq no longer criticizes liberalism, he has passed into the victors' camp and he supports the greatest ally, the invincible ally of the liberal society, consumerist and individualistic in which we live: the couple.

What makes, despite everything, that Houellebecq's books remain interesting to read, and that they always arouse my curiosity like that of millions of readers, it is at bottom the complete absence of scruples of the author. He does not hide behind any moral screen. He has no self-esteem. It faithfully expresses the basic desires of the society that shaped it, and it still has a linguistic background that is strong enough and rich enough to do so in an entertaining way. But on the strictly literary level, as on the sociological or philosophical level, Serotonin is the exact opposite of an apogee, a crowning of the work, it is the mark of an undeniable and, to be sure, sad enough forfeiture.
