Books that are a pain in the ass to read (and not in a good way) but very important to read thread. I'll start.

Wow op, I read this book in a single sitting & rather enjoyed it compared to other books I've been forced to read like the stranger. The top of my burn list would be kinda sorta

It's easy to read in a negative way and also unimportant? That sounds more like it.

>High school reading list book
>writer was a professional editor who, even if you want to argue is not good, you can't argue is easy to read.
Morrison is the epitome of clear and simple writing, and then she does dark subjects in that simple clear voice and normal people lose their shit. You might just be trash at thinking.

I didn't mean her writing was complex, I meant Beloved was boring as fuck in some parts. Complex writing is the good kind of "hard to read." We get it, you enjoy Toni Morrison because you don't have to think too much when reading her and it comforts you. Go enjoy some rupi kaur!

If it took you so long to read it that you could get bored, I can't imagine you getting through genuinely complex literature. Your bookshelf must be very patrician and the spines very pristine... it's okay, OP, thinking is hard.

Listen to your teachers, listen to your preachers
Lie down and get sucked off beneath the bleachers
Skipping AP Lit to get high with the crew, feel like The Stranger when it's all been done and through
Going thru the Metamorphosis, fucking goth chicks in all their orifices
Better luck next year, kid, you could be ditching class and learning lived experience shit, instead you're sitting on your ass, wooden chair, sucking the comparative analysis BA teacher's tit

Well, the most 'very important to read' stuff for the average person is pretty simple.
But, I'll offer you War and Peace (or Moby Dick for Americans). It's not incredibly difficult but complex enough to challenge the average contemporary consumer you think I am.
If you can finish a fucking Morrison (I repeat, basic high school lit), and get through War and Peace (or Moby Dick which is pretty simple), maybe read the first part of In Search of Lost Time (because I know you couldn't finish the whole book itself). Then I'll give you a gold star on your report card. A+

reading this book at the moment. It's absolute garbage. Its in essence a slavery ghost smut book and the NYT lists it as one of the most important books of the last 25 years..
It was a pain in the ass to read because its so damn boring and it repeats a narrative we've been fed as long as we can remember

>> No.12451256

>>12450304
I love Morrison's use of free indirect. I think this book might hammer in some of the narratives, but scenes like Beloved's birth, the slaves that are about to drown, and the women coming together at the end are just beautiful pieces that connect human experience with naturalism.

If you dislike her prose, that's fine, and I'd recommend Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, and Jazz over Beloved for their more stylized approaches or their narratives.
