>we have accurate crime statistics on rape in the ancient world...
>we can assume, because the ancient Romans were so open about the modern day term we call "homosexuality" that this was a deterrent from rape
>fbi crime stats claim that on average about 30,000 white women are raped by blacks annually in the united states alone.
>don't even bother checking with the sweedish rape stats.....
>doesn't consider those catamite eunuchs were being raped by strangers.

These fucking people are astounding.

What was wrong with SPQR? it's a standard retelling of the history (the mythical foundation story, the regal period, the republic, rise and fall of the empire, etc). It's hardly groundbreaking but it's a good read, at least imo.

I missed the hype when he became more well-known, what's the consensus of him on /lit/? Currently reading Antifragile and it's very interesting, though there are a few criticisms I'd make with the way it's written.
I checked out the Goodreads page for it and there were a bunch of 1-star reviews from people who were butthurt that he insulted hack industries.

Mary Beard lives a pretty wild life. Its hard to imagine she has time for serious scholarship which is why I think she keeps her subjects pretty light, like historical books for the beach.
