when did you realize that you're were in love with the idea of reading but not reading itself

that is 90% of this board

Start with short stories. They are much easier than novels. I keep a list of all the short stories I've read, and star the ones I want to return to and reread. So far I've read about 15 stories this year.

I hope many of the newfags here realise this soon and go back to their home boards of /v/, /tv/, /fit/, /r9k/, /pol/ and /reddit/.

>idea of reading
Not even that is true. This board is about collecting books purely as objects for display in shelf threads.

I love reading

I actually do enjoy reading lit. It makes my mind think and imagine things like no other art form.

>> No.12441696

I'm not in love with reading but it can be a lot of fun.

>> No.12441716

Anyone who spends significant time on this site is already reading for hours every day. Please be more precise when crafting threads.

Reading is not enjoyable immediately to most of us. It requires work, and pays slow dividends. Stop wanting everything to be easy.

Stop pretending "to be honest" about yourself so you don't have to try. Shame on you.

I realized that I actually like reading when I read Blood Meridian. I couldn’t get enough of the prose and read about 100 pages of it in a day. Eventually you’ll find a book that does it for you. Most of reading is sludging through shitty books that you won’t like to find gems that you enjoy, so naturally you won’t enjoy most books you read.

Some of us can read just fine anon

The only end of writing is to enable the reader better to enjoy life, or better to endure it.

if that's the case for you then you haven't found the right book yet

I enjoy reading most of the time, yes I have to fight a little to focus and not get distracted by my phone, but once I get into the book the pages fly by and I enjoy it. Perhaps this is the wrong board for you?

I'm more interested in the results of reading, not the act or the idea itself.

Reading Kant is painful but it's worth it when the ideas click. Same is true with a lot of classic novels which might be boring but they usually have something useful to think about after the fact.

I like reading, I just hate how long it takes. As I'm approaching my 30s, I'm really losing the motivation to spend time on things that take 20+ hours. Same reason why I stopped playing videogames. I know it's a bad habit, but these days I gravitate towards short stories, poetry, and anthologies.

More precisely, you're infatuated with the personal identity of being well read, but not the act itself nor the effort it requires. I've known that feeling on some level since before I came here. I've concluded that I'll always be an amateur. It's a self fulfilling prophecy.
