I want to reconnect with my religion and culture since growing up i was one of those "rational atheists" but really i was just to lazy to care about my religion and culture until now. What are some books to besides he obvious choice of the quran to learn the history of islam and it's teachings?

Dune, unironically. It gives good insight into the fanatasicm.

While he has a rather unfavorable view of Muhammad as an evil imposter heavily punished, he has a rather respectful presentation of Saladin in Canto IV, who dwells in Limbo with Aristotle and Plato, and explains that it's for sparing the Christians during the Muslim retaking of Jerusalem (the Crusaders slaughtered the entire city until blood flowed in the streats). This, I think, is one of the best examples of how the late medieval world did not agree with contemporary depictions of Islamic bloodthirstiness.

Your misreading is better than the original post.

Also remember that Dante thought (in line with many people in Christendom at that time) that Muhammad was some sort of heretical Christian who founded a sect, and not a independant prophet who founded a new religion on his own. That's why he put him in the circle for people who cause schism and division. Likewise Ali, Muhammad's nephew who is the authority figure in Chi'ism, is also in the same circle for creating yet another schism.

Read the Riyadh as-Saaliheen by al-Nawawi if you want to have a decent knowledge of ahadith, it compiles ~1900 of the most trustworthy accounts in sections based on subject matter

No, you were some ethnic faggot who so desperately wanted to be in proximity to whiteness that you would do anything and everything to distance yourself from what made you different, only to realize that the whites would've never valued you in the first place so now you are relying on the cultural accomplishments made by people who look like you to make you feel special.

What's it like to be a racially insecure white person? I always thought the Jews were the real master race. That IQ, my goodness. No wonder they've enslaved European civilization.

I grew up with a lot of second generation kids, whose parents were from Pakistan or Korea or Russia. It always broke my heart when they seemed even a little ashamed of their heritage. It must be hard growing up without a clear sense of being this or that, I have much sympathy for it. But I always thought the traditions they seemed to partly love and partly despise, the greater commitment to family or religion and so forth, were exactly the things mainstream America has lost touch with.

I know of a good passage on the subject, but dont have the book handy. It describes how America is a kind of zero culture that liquidated all the real cultures who arrive to it.

I think looking back to one's roots is a natural thing to do when you're becoming an adult, trying to make sense of who you are and where you come from.

I grew up in the zero culture, I never had a clear identity and have always felt my blood to be scattered, like some kind of thoroughly dissolved admixture (of 4 grandparents, there are 3 dramatically different cultural upbringings).

So I am envious of those who can look back and see some obvious source of identity, and I don't think its to be a "special snowflake." Its perfectly natural to wonder where you came from and to identify with it and reach back to it.

Daily reminder that the Quran does not forbid depictions of Muhammed and Muslims have historically depicted him in paintings, to not do so is a relatively new idea.

Pic related is really good. And read some tafsir of Qur'an, and the sahih hadith (Muslim, Bukhari). Now, this is advice I ought to follow also better but go to your local mosque and get involved with your local community.

Some of the best non-biased commentaries on Islam come from 'western' or even Christian authors and scholars. People should bear this in mind when they thing to 'read' into Islam they have to stick to Arab and Iranian scholars. Hodgsons is one such example. Frithjof Schuon is also good and as well for his broad perspectives on religion in general.

This "zero culture" never really seems to forge a cohesive identity in anyone, this melting pot, part of a whole approach just ends up becoming a tug of war between the two most prominent cultures (white and black in America for ex) and all the other ones either choose to conform to either of the two or just end up in an empty vacuum where no one could give two shits about it except for its food maybe
