Are liberrys.. I mean library's, ahem, really doing away with fees? Because that would be awesome.

I've honest to God paid probably around 700 dollars in library fees. It's awful, makes me anxious when they start piling up. I got collected on once because of 400 dollars in university library fees.

The calls came two or three times a day for like 4 months, always different numbers. Eventually the state withheld my state income tax returns for two years. True story.

Library time

>> No.12416958

It was over the course of a year. I checked out like 30 books in a few happy go lucky weeks after transferring to a big university with a massive library. Gradually I slipped into a slump, stopped attending class etc.

I got a bill for replacement fees that was several thousand dollars, and practically pissed myself. I returned all the books (6 or 7 months overdue) but the max fines stuck. Of course I refused to pay them.

I stole 5 or 6 books in revenge, I was an amoral edgelord at the time. Maybe I still am. Yes, I am still an amoral edgelord.

Book fees in my area are only about 5 dollars for a book that's a year overdue, if you still return it. Unless you plan on keeping the book permanently, there's no reason not to check out a book and return it after reading at your leisure. Unless that takes more than about 2 years. It's also the case that most people don't actually save the book because they're still reading it. Usually, they lose it or forget about it, and fines are only a deterrent if the person can alter their behavior to avoid them in a fairly low-cost manner.

This seems to be my impression, also. I wish there were a reasonable way to more easily return the books. I am in a pretty good situation now, but I used to have a shit work schedule and returning books was often a serious chore if my schedule took a shit.
