Is there any point in reading the LotR books after having seen the movies?

Yes, absolutely. Peter Jackson took certain creative liberties in making the films to make it all much more 'cinematic'- and that's fair enough, they are great films. But the books have a very different feel to them. For me it is the cosiest book ever and I always look forward to reading it again. But of course ymmv and I readily admit that Tolkien's style is not for everybody. Remember that he had been developing his mythical world for decades before he even started on lotr, and you really do get a feel for the immensity of this project. Tolkien really knew his mythology and it reads as a profoundly religious work, almost like a theodicy in some sense. I say go for it OP.
