Does F. Scott Fitzgerald deserve credit for The Great Gatsby?

I mean, when most people think of The Great Gatsby, they think of the Warner Bros./Leonardo DiCaprio version. No one ever thinks of the book version. When people think of the Great Gatsby story they think of the Baz Luhrmann films, no one even knows the original story nor do they care. In fact, whenever an adaptation tried to stay true to the original story, critics and audiences get upset that the adaptation DARE to drastically change everything from the “original” I.e. what they perceive as the definitive version.

I mean, I know the media wants to give Fitzgerald credit because he's Irish. But does he still deserve it when literally everyone hates his book and it has been so drastically changed that it’s unrecognizeable?

So really, shouldn’t Warner Bros. be credited with creating The Great Gatsby? Shouldn’t all media about the characters say “based on characters created by Warner Bros.” instead of F. Scott Fitzgerald?

Maybe it's just because I'm on /lit/, but I loved the book and have never watched the movies and never want to. Stop hanging around plebians and you might not have that problem.
And yes the GOD DAMNED AUTHOR DESERVES THE CREDIT. I've read three of his novels and he is, actually, just that good. Now fuck off back to /tv/.

That Luhrman version is an abomination. Out of all the Gatsbys, each has different strengths and weaknesses but overall I'd rank them:

1974 > 2000 > 1949 > root canal > 2013

The 1926 version is apparently lost
