Avoid Howard Zinn, he is a man with an agenda and puts historicity second.

This is a load of crap. Every historian incubates bias and Zinn is entirely forthcoming about his own. Speaking directly of A People's History, it's a supplementary text, and that's all it aims to be - a telling of the stories avoided by traditional histories. It's certainly worth reading.

thanks for that list, I'm checking out some of them in amazon.
i find these books to be pretty specific; they all cover a very short time range and deal with the topics at that given time thoroughly.

what i'd love would be a book that encompasses 1776-2000. I feel like I first need to know a little bit of everything and then, once I'm comfortable with the amount of knowledge i have, embark on a book like the ones you put in that list.

Anything published before 1970 will be okay. After that American History texts become increasingly politicized, to the extent that current "literature" about American History is exclusively about the ostensible suffering of some worthless niggers and how they "construct narratives of personal identity" or some bullshit like that.
