it's an academic popularity contest, it doesn't matter too much.
It's easy to complain about literature or peace, but the science awards aren't always pure gold. A lot of the time they give it to the guy who did the final little bit of effort, or the price winning discovery doesn't develop from that point while other competitors become vital parts of modern society or advanced studies.

You can't get a Nobel post 60s if you aren't essentially liberal. It's as much a prize for literary talent as a prize for adequate political views. Besides almost all Nobel commiette members have Swedish as a first language and few have a high-level mastery of a foreign language besides English so they would be incapable to judge books on style even if they wanted to (they don't).
