They do often smack of the guitar threads on /mu/ wherein it seems like the participant have forgotten that these things are tools rather than mere consumer objects to fetishize. Owning the thing makes little difference, one must use it and all that. Still I do peek in these threads sometimes because I like to have nice editions of books I love a lot and buying books can be kind of a nightmare (for me). I've never posted in one before.

But you're missing the nature of a lot of these posts. /lit/ is obviously full of new readers and tourists who hardly ever return. Nobody discusses fiction even when reading lists are usually the same (modern classics western canon kind of books) we get the same entry level bullshit.
Years ago the picture wasn't that different except for the dozen annoying tripfags who used this board to whore themselves
out (sometimes begging for money or books).
