Hey lit, I'm looking for a fantasy novel I came across while in my great-grandmothers basement. (pic not related. It had been my uncles as a kid and was sitting next to an original copy of splinter of the minds eye. This novel was set in a medieval kingdom in a small town with the main character being the bastard son of a local lord. This lord did not acknowledge him because of his marriage to a younger wife, although they had seen one another. (continued down below)

The main char. would later find the girl he has the hots for raped and he for some reason gets deported to fight a war no one in the kingdom he is in is talking about, the war is fought on another island/continent? Meanwhile, someone in another dimension opens the door to a dimension of demons, which promptly obliterate everything in the dimension, capturing the peoples souls and holding them prisoner. Meanwhile another character, female I think, explores a cross-roads in the dimensions and meets with others from different dimensions traveling through. She is searching for something and I believe she goes to a specific dimension with a recluse to find it.

It's a high fantasy multiverse novel, written before/at 1998.
deals with a bastard son who is sent off to fight in a war that is being kept secret from most of the medieval country he's in. and the multiverse as a whole.
Novel starts off with the invasion by demons of a dimension which opened a gate to a demon infested dimension.
Anyone heard anything about this before?

Sounded vaguely similar to Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, until the demon-portal came up.
