Non christian here, it's a boogieman religion based on fear of oimaginary punishment that got completely wrecked by the US into an absurd parody of itself, etc. I don't particularly like them.

With that said, during the middle ages the church defined higher education, protestants invented what we now understand as alphabetization, they kept the greeks alive (in great part thanks to muslims and competition, sure, but they still did), pushed the minuscule standard to make latin based languages readable, supported the sciences (most scientist burning was more about personal issues between them and local leadership, not a standard practice), and dedicated thousands of man hours to copy scientific texts that would had been burned like they were in every single great library over and over again.

A group that hurt progress way more were the pre-christian romans.

Do a quick search for dark ages on wikipedia. Most scholars dont even use it to describe the periods that used to be named as such because its contemporary use is a pejorative that doesnt properly reflect the era.
