This. I've read Vice, Edge and Lot before GR but it's so much better than all three. I don't think there's any reason not to start with it, his 'easier' books (though I found Edge to be much more impenetrable compared to GR) are not really similar to GR and probably won't give you an idea of what to expect. JUST JUMP RIGHT INTO IT

Pynchman has probably never read Aeschylus or Herodotus, so why should you?

>> No.12359036

While everyone has their own way to get into an author, i've found the following to be the standard intro:

1. Lot 49 - One of his weaker works (Pynchon himself considers it trash) but it's a good intro because it's really damn short. If you read it and think "this conspiracy stuff is fucking bullshit" then you might as well drop Pynchon cause it just gets worse. But if you're thinking 'this isn't perfect but I like what he's trying to set up" then you may actually enjoy the man.

2. V - his first book and pretty much a setup for the rest of his work. The most 'approchable.'. Read this to figure out if you enjoy a full pynchonian adventure. Also introduces some motiffs that'll return later in Rainbow.

3. Some recommend doing Vineland or Mason and Dixon if you still want to acclimate yourself. But I feel it's fine just jumping into Rainbow from here. Up to you whether you want to just read Rainbow or you're more into reading all of Pynchon.

4. Most place Against the Day here after Rainbox. Haven't read yet so can't give input. After this, do whatever you want, you either jive with him or you don't.

What Pynchon hasn’t read could fill a library, honestly.

he specifically mentions herodotus in m&d.

also on topic: why is gr so much better than the others? complexity? narrative? belief?
