Is the "well, where's YOUR book?" argument actually perfectly valid when it comes to shutting down amateur critics in literature?

Think about it. The argument fails when you speak about movies or TV shows or videogames, because obviously not everyone has the money or resources to make a movie or game. But a book is a solitary endeavor and purely determined by your own talent. If you've never published a book yourself, you shouldn't expect your opinions to hold any weight.

Don't need to be a pilot to know when the plane's crashing.

Critique is for most part assumed in the making of art. That's why a lot of people make art just for themselves.

Because ones ability to do and judge are different faculties. You can be a brilliant artist and be a bad critique and vice versa. Also you can make videogames and movies by yourself with the quality determined purely by your own talent.

>like it's fucking hard to tell if a bunch of dramatic prose has any worth or not.
why sell this man anything but what he already wants. criticism is just applying doubles, making antagonistic positions just as you find in debate rooms, except in much more refined parlour way. He signs his name and seals that envelope in duty.

Well, not everyone has the artistic/brain resources to write a novel, either. Your argument is flawed because you take for granted that every person is equally intelligent and apt for creative writing and that all it takes to write a novel is nothing but material possessions like pencil and notebook or a computer. It's a materialistic worldview at best.
