It’s not as bad as /sffg/ memes it out to be, but I wouldn’t call it good either. The world building is pretty good, and the magic system is neat if you’re into it, also the larger story being set up is promising. However the main character is Mary Sue self insert for the author who manages to be a chad badass while being a cuck.

The second book is where things really come off the rails and you realize Rothfuss has no idea where to actually take his story and keeps trying to sell you on just how awesome the main character is in the stupidest of scenarios. By the time you hit the super secret not ninjas village that only Kvothe is allowed to visit- oh and the ninjas are totally cool with sex, like hey man let’s take care of that boner so you can be a better ninja cool- you realize Rothfuss is a hack.

It's pretty shit, but at the very least, I finally started it. I can always replace it later though

>There is a tale that used to be passed around the dinner table on winter nights – an old legend left over from a time when that table was bare. It's a story about barren fields and hungry cities, starving children and farmers thin – but more importantly it's a story about an old wizard with a pan on his back, and the time long ago where for one night, the beggar, the tailor and the banker broke bread.

>That there was only one stale loaf in the whole of the town made little difference, for with his knife, the wizard cut every man a slice thick as his fist. That there were no potatoes in the fields was of hardly any consequence, for with a fire from nowhere, the wizard baked the rocks golden-brown. That stick-thin children lay dead in the streets mattered little at all, for with a sip from his flask, the wizard brought them back to the world of the living. The town feasted all day and sang all night, and then in the morning the the wizard said goodbye.

>It would be a pleasure to say that the famine ended that day, but truth is rarely as wonderful as fiction. It is the haze of memory that makes wizards of honest men, but true kindness is something that is rarely forgotten. So old-timers spin stories of the wizard who saved them, and they call him The Wandering Chef.

>>12352097
It's a more crass sort of humor, but John Dies At The End is pretty decent, and it's not nearly as brainless as it seems at first.

Why would we discuss a series that might never be written again?
Since I was here in lit in 09, every time a new Dresden book comes out there was bunches and bunches of threads discussing theories, this was long before sffg was even thought of, and when e/lit/ist used to report your thread when you were talking about sf/f, because "they weren't literature".
Then Butcher released that ending before the one where he spent an entire book as a ghost. We barely had threads that year, no one really wanted to discuss (James Marsters or w/e his name was didn't do the audiobook either). Then Jim released the last book and people pretended that ghost stories never happened. We had more threads than the ghost year, but less than the ones before.
Then butcher didn't release the next year, or the year after that... Or the year after that, or...
Now here we are. With a general dedicated to sff, where the outer e/lit/ist can't report us, and where there wasn't a new Dresden book in 5 plus years.

Tell me anon. Why would we discuss something that's been discussed already? Are you one of those faggots that only reads a few books, and could only discuss those books? Take a chart from the OP, hell even one of those chartfag creations. And read something else that isn't Dresden. You want a Dresden clone?
Try Benedict Jackka's Alex Versus or whatever the fuck it's called and Rivers of London.
Come back when you read something that isn't Dresden Files.

Hi /sffg/,

I am currently writing my first fantasy novel and wanted your input. Name some of the:
>cliches in fantasy that you hate
(or just cliches in novels in general)
>things that never happen to characters in fantasy

The second could be certain struggles that are fairly prevalent in the real world but very few writers incorporate into their stories when writing fantasy.

What is your opinion on romance? Can one write a popular book without having any romance in it? I've always detested cheesy lines and characters along with forced romances to appeal to the young adult audience in fantasy and don't have any plans for romance in my book(s).

Any other input from your side would be appreciated. What do you like to see? Since its a fantasy world, I'm messing around with physics a bit as well.

Thanks for reading/answering and best regards,
Anon.

>What is your opinion on romance?
its not strictly necessary. tough a bit of romance can be a good plot device or a way to facilitate character growth or some way to flesh out world-building. obviously you cant shoehorn it in and it needs to be either A meaningful if its a big part or B naturally happening as the story or character relationships progress. adult romance and ya romance are two different things too. dont lump them together and just label both as them. if you cant write it well dont do it at all is my opinion. but if it fits into your story you should absolutely atleast try to make it interesting.

Anyone disappointed in the direction Gibson has taken his work? The Sprawl and Bridge trilogies were arguably fantastic pieces of work. Gibson has continued a unique atmospheric writing style that enabled the construction of a universe that revolved around the characters. The Peripheral had a break from this signature style to pursue an overused time travel plot point with other generic plot point sprinkling. The upcoming book appears even worse, attempting to connect to modern politics, sociocultural trends, and technology with concrete references.
It's a shame that Gibson feels the need to change his signature writing style to make political statements and feed a different audience.
Gibson's works have been known for subtly painting a dystopia through the experiences of the antihero, detailed descriptions of objects/settings, social abstractions of a future society etc. His works were always believable despite being fiction, due to the attention given to create a plausible near future setting using the platform of technology's presence in humanity's journey. The Peripheral and the upcoming book represent none of that.

If you follow through be aware that 2 is sort of boring and pointless, and 3 is much better but the ending is super rushed and needs 4.

You're probably right. 13 or 14 would be better because if you're going to forget about a painful period of your life that's the segment most people would want to cut out. Plus, there are kids that age who write novella or even novel-length fanfics

As for the setting, I'll have to figure that out. I have a few ideas in mind, but they're full stories in their own right and don't need this extra level of plot. It might have to end up being something more generic, but I was hoping for a desert setting of some kind

The Peripheral is good until about halfway, when it becomes apparent that Gibson isn't about to fully explore the consequences of the world he set up. Not to mention the explanation of the "jackpot" is a total copout and the ending is an asspull. I agree though, the blurb for his new one is laughable.

"Set in an alternate universe where Clinton won the 2016 election".

Like, seriously? Not surprising based on his Twitter feed, but it's still sort of baffling.

Imo, it lacks all the defining characteristics of Gibson's style. That meticulous universe creation just isn't there. All the attention is wasted on time travel which like you stated, ended up being poorly explored.

Indeed, considering how abstract and interwoven any themes were in his earlier work. Interesting how some of his best work came when he was much younger and completely submerged in counter culture.

Asimov's "Caves of Steel" was kinda funny in some ways, very kitschy particularly when the characters went into speeches about what makes one human seemingly out of nowhere, the ending was just laugh out loud silly with the detective and the robot walking hand in hand after catching the murderer.

Still entertaining to see how a detective would use a robot's abilities in an investigation and it was an easy read however i didn't like Bayley's attitudes about Daneel or robots in general and how he gets to like them eventually but only because he finds himself superior to them. The whole laws of robotics were kinda annoying too, not harming humans and having to listen to their orders unquestionably but meh i guess those were some good rules for him to base his mystery upon

Starts off as your bog standard coming off age YA fantasy with super talented protagonist(unsurprisingly inspired by Kingkiller Chronicle) and takes a hard 90 turn halfway through into grim derp "mhmmyeah war is so horrible" territory. But of course every bad YA book also needs a love triangle and the fem mc eye fucking a mysterious dude named Altan.
Please, this book is everything that's wrong with modern fantasy,"Oh wow she captured the Nanking massacre so well, that automatically makes the book awesome!"

Could be plausible if you have the teen publish it on-line as a fanfic.

The second season of the TV-series Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (loosely, very loosely based on Douglas Adams' work) revolved around a fantasy world in season two that was created by a child and turned 'real'. One thing that struck me as interesting was the way the fantasy setting kept all the details that where clearly made up by a child's imagination, flaws and all — like scissor swords, naturally occurring pink hair, a sky train prison, and a moon with an actual face.

That concept might be interesting to explore; i.e., the world the teenage author created doesn't have to make sense from an economic, sociological, or physical perspective, giving you freedom to introduce some outlandish concepts without having to find a rational explanation for them that makes complete sense to the adult author. If it made sense to the teenage writer, it can exist there.

>yeah it picked up my interest enough with the world building despite thinking his conveyor belts for public transport were again pretty silly.

I still think it's an interesting concept, although dated. Heinlein wrote a nice short story about massive conveyor belt roads in 1940. It can be read integrally here:
