So it's a novel about a twenty-something-year-old man who feels disassociated from the world and human relationships, who works a mediocre dead-end job, who craves intimacy but is unwilling to be intimate with others, who wastes his own time, and who muses on his vague and endless anxiety.

But, he's aware that he's literally just a character in a cliche absurdist novel. A fictional entity inhabiting a fictional world, which isn't even exciting or thoughtful--it's just meta.

Well, he has the Quijote symptom. After not existing in reality for long enough your own life becomes a story you look at from the outside, usually utilizing the same methods you use to analyze fiction. In this case the method of analysis of the protagonist is resorting to "le distant atomized modern man." By seeing himself in the light of a dumb stereotype, he can help but feel his life becomes absurd and devoid of solidity, even if he suffers greatly throughout.

The solution would be for him to stop being a fag and join in, although the extent of his psychiatric ailment could stop him from reintegrating as a person rather than a character.

If you're a man you have to build something or you become miserable. Building a description of misery is something satisfying. The problem is that the man is well off enough in society that he isn't in mortal danger or terrible living conditions enough to cause him to be constantly working to improve his situation, yet he doesn't want or feels he is unable to confront challenges to advance himself.
He's stuck in comfort, and the writing is him digging himself a deeper hole as all it does is allow him to examine his own self-made restraints more closely.
