Right now I'm living in Tokyo. Bookoff is the best place to buy second hand books, Kinokuniya for brand new books (if they are cheaper than Amazon), but the best bookstore is Kitazawa Bookstore. The atmosphere is greeat, they have all kind of old books and it's a beautiful store.

Western books aren't popular at all, besides from Harry Potter. A lot of people can't tell the difference between The Lord of the Rings and The Odyssey.
People read a lot, I see it every day on trains and buses, but they always, always read japanese books and "how to" books are very popular.
Right now I'm in Nagoya, with my girlfriend's parents. They have a bookshelf full of those books, I think the only fiction among those is a Dragon Quest book.

In Melbourne I wouldn't say there's an outstanding number of good bookshops, Readings is always top notch though and probably has the widest selection as far as I can tell + music and film, etc. I feel like their philosophy section is also the most dependable I've seen in the country.

I genuinely don't think I have any other bookstore aside from a placed called C books or Circle books or something. It's a small used store with a huge section of romance novels (at least compared to everything else.)
