Only a small part in the whole story but there's a lot to it. The whole text is condensed, fast, mean. The protagonist has so much love and so much hatred and so much confusion and so much lucidity that it feels like eveything has been said at every turn of the page. The last part is a bit slower, and the tone is different. I don't know how it reads in English but you'll get the cabin-fever-fuelled jungleoutpost negro law-laying that you seem to be looking for. Plus some of the best fiction written about WW1 and the transformation of Paris after the war.
