What did I think of it /lit/?
Unironically, really loved it. I picked up on colonialism/generally man as a destructive force and what gives a being humanity as two big things, and tangentially saw some sort of abandonment of morality with the twisting of a bunch of Biblical events. Anything I'm majorly missing out on?

It was good. Wasn’t blown away by it thought

Colonialism has nothing to do with this book at all.

Your grasp is too wide to be useful or entertaining. Do your own homework. Concentrate on theme and character and pace as he does.

So was the kid as soft as the Judge said or was he just ass blasted because the kid rejected him?

Maybe I missed it but the characters individually don't seem to get mentioned much during their crimes so it's hard to tell imo, although the kid is shown to kill when needed to, and didn't back down from a fight.

The kid was the only survivor who hadn't fallen into mindless psychopathy- he was a rough character but still cared for others and wouldn't participate in senseless cruelty. The gang's descent into violence was arranged and encouraged by the Judge (an archon), and he managed to resist, which is why he had to be punished. His very life was an insult to the demiurge, who cannot be beaten. War is god etc.

The book actually clicks very well with Biblical morality. "When the lambs is lost in the mountain, he said, They is cry. Sometime come the mother. Sometime the wolf." In the Bible, the evidence points to the existence of both God and an accuser, Satan, who roams around the earth like a lion looking to devour, and it claims Satan is the judge of this world. In the world of Blood Meridian, almost all of the characters ignore God, and so they live in the world under the dominion of, well, the Judge.

Very early on in the story, the kid comes close to having an actual encounter with God. He leaves his home, goes on a journey which is described as a pilgrimage, almost dies, and finally is listening to a preacher. He's at the brink of a spiritual awakening and in walks the Judge, who ruins the whole thing. After that, the Kid is left in a world where the Judge has dominion.

>> No.12322509

>>12320793
The Kid's journey parallels McCarthy's own flight from the doomed East into the untamed West. He says something like:

>His people are known as hewers of wood and drawers of water. In truth his father has been a schoolmaster.

which runs parallel to

>Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God. (Joshua 9:23)

The Kid is the orphan of a doomed intellectual and philosophical tradition which is really just a disguise for unbridled war and bloodshed. Like the other gang members, he goes West to rediscover his true nature (as a killer).
