The author only lived in Afghanistan for a grand total of three years of his life, and has spent most of life in the UK and Iran. Throwing a couple of Pashto words randomly into English sentences is enough to transport his audiences into Afghanistan, it would seem.

Do you even know what pseud means? Evidently not.. Stop using buzzwords for which you don't even know the definition. Pseud means pretentious, someone who thinks they know a lot about great art. Pseud derives for the greek word (ψεύδω) which means lying aka being fake. Yes, but the guy greentexted Tolkien. Which is anti-pseud. It goes against the definition you gave and yet he attributed it to "pseud retards taking all over the board". Which makes no sense. I'll give another example. It's like if someone said you were a pseud for reading Twilight. That makes no sense. If someone said you were a pseud for reading and continually talking about tractatus logico philosophicus then that WOULD make sense and be valid.

>For those of you don't understand "it's reddit", on 4chan, Reddit is perceived as a bunch of naive tools who believe that being a nerd is cool. As a result, they're childishly enthusiastic about their hobbies (which they've only barely scratched the surface of), find random humor completely hilarious, and are notoriously pedantic. This is due to the fact that they believe that nerds are some kind of "cultural elite" simply because their interests aren't completely mainstream.
>BUT, since they don't see themselves as particularly alienated by society, they haven't developed the pleb/patrician paradigm, unlike 4chan. Consequentially, they also have the prudish, politically-correct mentality that goes with the delusion that they can still be normal members of society and accepted by potentially anyone, or that they have moral standards to uphold. This makes them very prone to being shocked or amused by the cheapest transgressions and subversions.

Any redditor browsing here please don't selfishly think you're the exception when we tell you not to browse here. Realize that as a smaller community we are able to have an original culture and when you make the decision to browse here you are deciding that you don't care about that and just want to suck as much out of this place while you slowly kill it. Top comment:
My wife breaks it down into different categories of books.

Cotton candy books: easy to read, light, fluffy, won't fill you up.

Grilled cheese books: more substance than cotton candy, but still relatively easy reads, some of the best childhood memories come from these

Lasagna books: layers, but not as dense as other books. Re-reading them rarely gets old as there is many times new things to see when you read.

Chocolate cake books: rich, good, dense, layered. You can't do these all the time, but every once in a while is a fantastic treat.

Reading a healthy, well-rounded book selection is a great way to prevent stagnation and vary up how much mental power you put into a book.

The only easy books I can understand reading are nostalgia shit like winnie the pooh and or foreign language stuff to help you learn. Redditors of course are just trying to justify reading young adult fiction as a thirty year old man.

Which raises an additional question, how the FUCK do you find young adult fiction entertaining? I can kind of understand why capeshit is popular since it's a spectacle and maybe it's cool to see the comics you read as a child come to life, but who the fuck is unironically interested in this teen shit?

Okay okay.

THIS. Is an actual Reddit fag. I’m usually pretty stubborn but now I believe.

Yes, you see Reddit has a stupid, and frankly dated, atheist subculture movement going on. This is actually an up and coming religious textual analysis site. Literature includes many things such as you have derided, like Hegel or The Holy Bible. A good book can make you take 10 minutes on a single page. Sometimes you have to really think, otherwise you’re just not living.

Anyway, The Holy Bible is a great Book. Out of my top five, I see two of them on the list, The Holy Bible and Plato’s Republic. If you haven’t read either of these, you should do so now. The Republic will take you two weeks, max. The Bible? Well, that usually takes a few months at least. Hopefully after reading you’ll understand a little bit more about how reality works. You see, morals are like geometric shapes, in a sense Plato was right. You discover these and understand how reality works better the way it’s constructed. That’s why, my dear redditor, The Holy Bible is so high on the list. I’m sorry no one is taking the time to explain this to you, but I hope now you’ll understand.

Reddit does have a few decent philosophy / lit subreddits, but they're really small and lean heavily into critical theory and marxism, things /lit/ despise whether out of closeted /pol/ism or contrarianism.

I'd say the ratio of shit to not quiet shit is a lot higher here, /lit/ is pretty active even compared to /pol/ while a popular subreddit will have millions of readers compared to a thousand or so on its antithesis.

If we're so similar, why not read more recent books and just skip the part where you have to crawl through the historical context to find something relevant and enlightening. Dostoevsky is a great example in this case because his books like "The Idiot" and "Notes from Underground" pretty much explicitly revolve around trends of his time. It's not too much of a struggle. The only cultural thing that I learned from Crime and Punishment was the name for currency called rubles. It's not a necessity to enjoy a majority of old books; such as 1984, Brave New Worlds, and The Sound and the Fury. The only stories that I can think of that required me to understand certain bits are Shakespeare, some Greek, Holy Bible, and some Indian literature. Everything is in the footnotes.
>but to achieve what exactly?
This is like asking what's the point of reading. There are many reasons, mine is for fun.
>why not read more recent books
Most of them are terrible, and to be more specific young adult literature is pretty bad; I've read The Hunger Games (all 3), The first Maze Runner, some of the Twilight, some of Paper Towns, and the first 3 Harry Potter books (while Harry Potter is okay for children, it's escapism literature, which I don't think is really healthy for most people, I recommend checking out https://youtu.be/NqlBtMoNtko); and most of it is really bad. I've also read some books like the Coddling of the American Mind which was more intellectual and formal, and some of Bilton Nick's books. A majority of the books seem like kiddie stuff, diversity (while I've read bits of why do all the black children sit together in the cafeteria; it's very well written and I recommend it, I feel like there is an overwhelming amount of these kinds of books being made that pushes me away because I feel like I already have an understanding of this subject), and overall boring and not well written.
>why bother
Because It's well written and fun. stories like Crime and Punishment, Frankenstein, many Shakespeare plays, and many more classics have captivated me to feel so emotionally responsive to their tone of work that is so beautiful to experience, which I feel most recent books absolutely fail to capture. The most recent thing to make me reach this latitude is Berserk(only manga I've read; while unfair to list with literature, it's the only thing that has made me feel to euphoric that was made it recent times) which has been running since 1989.

Some redditor has written a list of books written by women, what do you think lads?

I'm not going to list 100 to prove such an obvious point, but I'm happy to give some recommendations! Here's my (of course very subjective and not at all exhaustive) list:

The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi

A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing by Eimar McBride

The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness by Kyung-Sook Shin

Here's To You, Jesusa! by Elena Poniatowska

My Antonia by Willa Cather

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

Weep Not, Child by Ngugi Wa Thiong'o

A Dream of Ding Village by Yan Lianke

Anything by Jane Austen or a Brontë sister (even Anne)

Middlemarch by George Eliot

Anything Toni Morrison

Guapa by Saleem Haddad

Beyond the Rice Fields by Naivo

The Wonder (Emma Donoghue)

The Awakening (Kate Chopin)

Season of Migration to the North (Tayeb Salih)

Wolf Totem (Jiang Rong)

The Book of Night Women (Marlon James)

I'd be happy to go into what I like about any of these books that catches your eye, by the way (in what detail I can, as it's been a while since I read some of them!).

I don't claim to be an expert by any means; I'm well aware that my own reading habits are too western, and I'm only just beginning to explore what's out there (and finding tons of amazing literature I never would have encountered if I didn't make the effort).

Also, many of the non-western/non-white books I listed are more recent and may or may not hold up over time. I would see that as an argument for a list being somewhat white-male heavy if it focuses on the 19th century and earlier, but there's so much 20th century and more recent stuff on this list, and it's so overwhelmingly white male, that I really don't believe it can be argued that there's no bias.

Adding on to the list here:

The Visiting Privilege by Joy Williams

The Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson

Bluets by Maggie Nelson

Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin

Transit of Venus by Shirley Hazzard

Goodbye and Good Luck by Grace Paley

Chelsea Girls by Eileen Myles

The Vegetarian by Han Kang

Fever Dreams by Samanta Schweblin

Thus Were Their Faces by Silvina Ocampo

Speedboat by Renata Adler

Bell Jar is literally YA-level.
>no Flannery O'Connor, Ursula Le Guin and most significantly Virginia Woolf - an actually brilliant writer.
>putting Austen and the Bröntes together
They're on almost opposite poles as far as Romanticism goes. I'd posit that Austen is far superior too, but I'll admit I'm not a fan of Romantic novels in general - even though I love poetry and music within the movement, I don't think it's suited to the form of the novel.
>even Anne
lol
More people on /lit/ should read Middlemarch though. People seem positive about it when it's mentioned, but it should be mentioned more. Don't think it's a gender thing though, as Hardy is barely mentioned either.

Toni Morrison is one of the LEAST offensive names in that list. She's the only contemporary one that's Nobel-prize tier.
