What literary merit do people find in 'The Sun Also Rises'? I'll never fucking understand this

It’s about how much depth of characterization and emotional impact he can create with such an incredibly terse and understated style. Not to mention the famous iceberg theory. It’s a pretty Zen aesthetic. If you’ve ever tried to write short stories or novels you can see it’s actually a bit impressive how much Hemingway achieves with such simplicity and paring down. It seems artless and overly easy but you can feel the energy and effort behind it. The descriptions of the bullfight are also pure art, very cinematic.

>Should have ended there.

His short stories are my favourite, read a good paper on chapters as short stories and couldn't help but think Hemmingway writes short stories and glues them into a book. Killers is Nabokov's favourite and one I enjoyed studied.

The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber is the best thing I've read by him.

His novels aren't as good as his shorter fiction but I enjoyed The Sun Also Rises most out of the three I've read.

Overrated trash writer who people like because he has a sweet beard and drinks rum and killed himself like a boss. That's literally it. And he only got the Nobel because it's basically in the contract to give it to an American every 15 years or so.
The Short Life of Francis Macomber is the only thing even remotely worth reading by him. I understand his style and I get what he was trying to do, but it's just not enjoyable to read.
