Bonus points if it involves Gauls, and how they dealt with conquest and enslavements. Also stuff where women have a big part, but anything goes

Thank you! Is it worth reading if I've already seen the series?

Not that poster but yes it's one of the best books of all time

It also incorporates Tacitus so there are a few bits in Gaul

Yeah
The show covers almost 80-90% of the book, but it still is worthy

Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough. There's a small amount of actual faggotry early on but they're ok.

I second I, Claudius.

Also, whilst I've not read it, this board has a high opinion of John Williams' Augustus.

Consider yourself lucky OP, for I spent the last two years reading in that genre so I can give you a decent list which is not pulp but from serious writers. Also most of these books can be found on the net:

Gore Vidal's "Julian" as a must, as is Robert Grave's "I Claudius". The latter is two books, a lot of people are not aware of that and read only the first one. John William's "Augustus" as well and "Memoirs of Hadrian" by Marguerite Yourcenar, also Dugan's "Family Favourites". Peter Green's "The Sword of Pleasure" is excellent but hard to get (borrow it on archive.org). Allan Massie wrote a lot. Not as good as the aforementioned in my opinion, but it's serious at least: Tiberius, Antonius, Nero's Heirs, Caligula, Caesar, Augustus. And then of course Harri's "Cicero Trilogy" though the last part is only on the net in Dutch.

Lion Feuchtwanger's "Josephus Trilogy" is almost forgotten outside of Germany.

Picrelated is a classic, a bit too much Christfaggotry for my tastes but good nevertheless.

Didn't think anyone here would actually like I Claudius, I read around half of it and it is one of the only novels I couldn't be bothered finishing, I'd already read suetonius and tacitus and he basically just rewrote those authors with more embellishments

Sulla has his way with some 14yo actor boy's bumhole. It's implied not explicit but still. Sulla is a degenerate, he's in a three-way relationship with two women at the time also
