As a 16 year old male I couldn't ever imagine reading this, but if you're female and this book could have a positive impact then read it.

I'm sexist, but certainly not misogynistic- it's clear a lot of people on this board have gleaned something of worth from Peterson's pop self-help book, there isn't anything shameful in that. Nobody who has read 12 Rules and benefited from it should have any reason to put down a book like this, unless they themselves are misogynistic.

All this being said, I'm not sure that such pop self-help books will make as much of a positive impact as some higher quality literature. Meditations and some stoic philosophy like Epictetus is would imo be far more beneficial in bolstering your self-confidence. Paired with Carnegie's WF&IF and perhaps some books on behavior (there are a lot of good ones written by ex-fbi agents) and you should have more solid platform from which to promote yourself.

I think that what he would have wanted to respond with was probably something about how his father is an idiot who after trying to kill his mother and younger brother with an exacto knife, was put in jail, luckily his mom got sole custody.

The mom seems to be very well read and quick-witted but very much so a different person than anon. She has tried to instill a love of literature in anon and his brother since they were young, but his brother related to and took to it a lot faster than anon did. Until anon was around 14 the only thing he seemed to be interested in reading was Tolkien and his favorite composer was Wagner (you get the idea.)

It was only after having delved so deeply into film (mostly Japanese New Wave, like Teshigahara) and consequently film theory (especially Deleuze) that anon began to see literature in a new light. Since then he learned to love the authors that his favorite directors did, then became motivated enough to autodidactically teach myself from scratch just as he did with film. I’m sure it was very rewarding for him. 4 whole years later he posted in this thread.

Aw, I wish her and her sister well. Sure, maybe they aren't as traditional as they present themselves to be. Or maybe they are, we can't say. But if not, so what?
