It doesn't sound wrong.
A purely materialistic worldview would explain matter only by the means of matter, not by forces, scales, rules, or theories, since all of those exist not in matter itself, but in the mind. Even assuming that matter is consistently anything would rely on some level of abstraction.
Therefore, pure materialism is completely unconnected to the way humans think about matter.

What is "pure materialism"? I mean, materialism reaches all the way from like Artistotle (arguably) to Spinoza, to the Vienna Circle, to Marx, to Deleuze. If you want to have a real discussion about this you're going to have to be a bit more specific.
