Why are arthoes so infatuated with this book? Every time I see an arthoe on ig or vsco or any other social media they plug this book. Is it becuase of the “progressive” subject matter or becuase Nabokov uses purple prose for most of the book and it’s seen as an intellectual book?

Wait, if you want to live as a hermit does this give others the impression you are a latent/closeted homosexual? I've only ever been attracted to girls and I wouldn't mind having one with me but I know it would only end in disappointment for her due to the conditions/my poor conversational abilities/interests

No, Thoreau was just notorious for being a confirmed bachelor. IIRC there are no female characters in Walden. Thoreau spends a whole chapter about how beautiful the muscles and masculinity of this one lumberjack was. Contemporaries of his said he was effeminate. He never married and apparently never dated women either

When the man spends 2 pages talking about the way a mountain is cast against the sunlight wouldn’t you consider that purple prose? I’m not saying it isn’t beautiful ( I enjoyed all of the flowery descriptions and I also enjoy Pynchon and other maximalist writers as well ) but it’s hard to argue that ~75 pages of that book could be removed without a single drop of plot missing. And around 75 more pages could be rewritten to be shorter and lose minimal effect on the whole story

I can't tell if it's my modern perspective or the author's intention, but a lot of this seems rather satirical. I got the same sense from Walden.
