>Early philosophy dismantled STEM into being cold and pointless, and the truly important things only being expressed through art and not language
>Later philosophy concluded everything was just rule-following language games, even higher level mathematics. Language becomes the base of all life and human achievements, from landing on the moon to praying for a loved one's soul.
Why doesn't /lit/ appreciate this guy more? If he were alive today, this would be his favorite board without a doubt.

Because no one on here is intelligent enough or has enough patience to learn his philosophy. You losers can't get past Aristotle.

>Drowning in Catholic fervor
>Almost took the brownpill and became a monk
>Favored reading great literature like Tolstoy rather than autistic Philosophical Journals bickering whether Set Theory somehow has underpinnings of Idealism
>Despite being out of the philosophical loop, managed to make huge contributions to the field
Yeah, he should be /our/ guy

He really only published two works.
His first philosophical work was the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, but that's a ridiculously demanding first step into his philosophy. But you can't read his second work Philosophical Investigations without first understanding Tractatus.
So, I'd say start with some intro-level talks/lectures about him on YouTube, then work slowly into the source material of Tractatus itself.

Read it again, Tractatus is more than that. A lot of it is wrong, but it's more than you think

On Certainty or Philosophical Investigations
I haven't read some of the other small volumes like On Color but I would imagine they're okay too. Anything but TLP really.

>>12219687
>He really only published two works.
He published one, the TLP. The rest are unfinished or collected notes, posthumously released.

>you can't read his second work Philosophical Investigations without first understanding Tractatus
You absolutely can. He makes some reference to it, but the book isn't constructed in such a way that every section is crucial. You'll get a lot out of it even without TLP.

>> No.12219721

>>12219708
He was going to publish Philosophical Investigations if he hadn't died. "On Color" and "Brown and Blue Books" are just notes of his put together later. The Investigations were meant as an actual book to be published and read. Doubt he would have published anything after Investigations, he seemed pretty content with it.

Well he was very much into poetry too, but probably music more so. I heard somewhere that he was invited to the University of Vienna to give a lecture on Mathematics and Logic, and he instead read German poetry with his back turned. However, his later philosophy is entirely on language, everything becomes language to him.

Always start with late Wittgenstein. The only people who say start with TLP are people who study a very peculiar tradition that thinks Frege is still relevant. Someone saying to start with the TLP is like if you asked where to start reading about psychology and philosophy of mind and someone told you to go back and read Freud chronologically. No one is saying you don't want to have an understanding of Freud and how he fits into the study of mind ultimately, but come on.
