Reminder that V. in Love is by far the best chapter of this book, which is by far Pynchon's best

>> No.12212590

>>12212577
that chapter was underwhelming. started out perfectly but the play and resulting "impalement" were mishandled

the most enjoyable parts of this book talk about Profane in New York

I think Mondaugen's Story left the strongest impression on me

>> No.12213254

I thought years of browsing /b/ as a teen had made me immune to gore but the description of the nose job almost made me puke.

>> No.12213293

>>12212577
Confessions of Fausto Maijstral is my favourite.

>> No.12213308

Mondaugen's Story for me.

>> No.12213327

>>12212577
no its definitely the chapter where the guy has the fever dreams about colonial days

>> No.12213361

Mondaugen's Story is Gravity's Rainbow in miniature.

>> No.12213363

V. is Pynchon's sloppiest work.

>> No.12213436

So, I've read crying of lot 49, GR, M&D, and inherent vice. Of those only GR really got to me - the others were good, but GR was fucking amazing. Is V on that level?

>> No.12213494

>>12213436
V. is ok at best

>> No.12213508

bleeding edge is his masterpiece

>> No.12213659

>> No.12213663

rereadign this has been on my near future to-do list since 2015 when i last reread it

>> No.12213675

read GR instead

>> No.12213697

>>12213675
i have, i was pretty obsessed with it for a while and i feel like i have a pretty good grasp on it but V. is still largely a mystery to me.

You’re right anon

>> No.12214336

>>12213436
Yes. That GR was appreciated argues that V. will be too. Congratulations for being able to read. It's rare these days clearly

>> No.12214379

>>12213436
V. is good but not GR level. It's exceptional for a first novel. Has some shared themes and characters that show up again in GR.
Someone in another thread made the joke that GR featuring V-2 rockets means that GR was V 2 all along and I quite liked that way of thinking about it.

>> No.12214530

>>12214379
Eh, Pynchon himself thought about this way back in the day anon fwiw

but M&D is better than GR

read V a little while ago. i liked mondaugens story and In which stencil nearly goes west with an alligator

>> No.12215571

Probably his worst book. Squanders a lot of good work.

>> No.12215832

I just reached chapter 10. This booking is going to have to get bad really fast for it it be “okay” or “sloppy”. It’s really good, in addition to Mondaugen’s story, my favorite chapter has been She Hangs on the Western Wall. That alone was worth the price of admission

>> No.12215856

Sloppy for Pynchon. Bad Pynchon is still better than the vast majority of anything ever written.

>> No.12215859

>>12215832
Confessions of Fausto is the chapter most people seem to shit on most for being clunky or sloppy but even that is still great.

WATCH OUT artistic expert coming through

>>12213126
It was the heaviest.

>>12213363
Sloppy but beautiful.

>>12213508
One of his masterpieces. Seriously overrated. Why make a yenta the protagonist? To ward off something?

hard to wrap your head around his age when this was published. the nose job passages made me wince, even though i had no idea about the specific anatomical side of it, brilliant stuff. the profane sections - and this really boggles the brain, folks - is set in the 1950s(!), you could be forgiven for accidentally placing these scenes in the current year, truly a man who had his finger on the pulse of hip society in the hippest of all places, you know? was even impressed with how conversant old Tom was with internet culture in Bleeding Edge (2013), I had worries going in, but my ageist prejudices were clearly dumbfounded, perhaps down to Tom's diligence in research, or perhaps he remains as a man with his ear to the ground on yoof culture. bravo, old boy.
