this novel is eerily relatable. the fear, the lies, the clowning, the double life, the performance, the comfort among outcasts, the feeling of life lived on the verge of being "found out". is this a personality disorder or a universal aspect of the existential problem?

to read this does not make me feel less alone, but only more insecure, as the moment of Takeichi seeing through the narrator "You did that on purpose"

I couldn't relate because Oda was popular with girls and not a virgin.

Decent post. Throw in some Israel worship and video game hate and you’ve got a good boomer post. Also, instead of John Green say Rush Limbaugh or Steven Crowder

I don’t like this book. I don’t like that Dazai defends Oda despite the fact that he is self-centered coward. All Oda’s thoughts are about himself, he doesn’t try to look for truth and beauty outside himself. That’s why he loses.
I prefer “Notes from the undeground”. Author truly depicts this type of pathetic and egocentric people.

im not sure if i agree with that. oda tries to find beauty in his painting and illustrating, as for truth i don't think he has the luxury. he lives in constant torment and anxiety, he can't conceive of something as stable as truth especially when his entire identity is built on lies, truth is lost to him which is itself no small part of his torment. further, it's a novel about a condition of self. it's self absorbed because it is an existentialist novel. in as much as it is autobiographical it shows an ugly and selfish portrait of Dazai but he surely had some capacity for good in his real life as we all do, even if he was unable to see it.

When he grew up no one forced him to be like everyone else. All his fears are lies. Yeah, he had a hard childhood and it is reflected in his personality.
But he as an adult didn't come to realize that all his problems are caused by egocentrism, that means for me that he doesn't deserve sympathy.

>> No.12212188

His pathology stemmed precisely from the opposite of being self centered. This seems to be a dead thread, I am not sure if I should go into it.

I don't quite see where he's being "defended". His suffering sort of invites pathos but there's very little debate about his being, as you say, pathetic, cowardly, selfish, deceitful, etc.

Notes From Underground invites sympathy in just this way. I was moved to tears while reading it.

>But he as an adult didn't come to realize that all his problems are caused by egocentrism
Because he was so deeply invested in his fears. Are you dumb? He was so deep in his hole, in his denial and paranoia, there was likely no getting through to him. He would have had no epiphany. Do you expect every adult to just realize all their problems one day and then go and be normal and happy? Some people never escape

He is unable to arbitrate for himself. He has grounded this function in the other, he is in fact not egocentric in the common understanding, rather he is absurdly concerned with his immanent hallucination of the other. His early experience of alienation generated this sense of insecurity, which begot the ''clowning''. Every act becomes a rigid pretension, even a cough. Imagine that you are told that you are under surveillance, in some situation. Your behavior would most likely alter, it usually does for most people. And for who is this alteration for? You could still claim ego-centrism here, and I would not disagree, in the subtle sense of that phenomena, but look, it is mediated by the other, and of course it remains egocentric, it remains immanent, this can not be avoided, save for experiences of self-transcendence which constitute of non-being, or at least, some detachment from whatever psychological narrative you find yourself in constant reference to.There is hardly any content in his ego which belongs to him, because of this mediation, he himself belongs to the very noumenal humanity of which he is horrified, not as a member, but as a property. For him, the spectator/camera is always present, he can not stop the act, and the actor is at the whims of the crowd, in his great insecurity and reliance on this other. This can not be called ego-centrism, when his ego lies empty and his nerves twitch at the whim of the other, and all of this goes on, absolutely involuntarily. His fears are real insofar as his reactions are involuntary. His problems, then, were not caused by ego-centrism; they may perhaps have been healed at least to some extent, by a healthy dose thereof.

Probably from Yozo enjoying the irrationality of the communist meetings, or being comfortable with prostitutes, or his relationship with Tsuneko.
