What are /lit/'s opinion on this?
I just borrowed it from a mental health ward yesterday.

I haven't read it, but I heard it's a decent newer synthesis of Brave New World and 1984, although I think it too would need a proper updating to take account of newer developments with the internet and so on.

My political theory professor really liked the book and mentioned it a lot in class. I think the concept is pretty boring, but you check it out

I had a gov professor once that was completely enamoured with this author. I'm not sure how much of societal change I'd credit to a change in civic engagement/community activity. We have to acknowledge WHY people stopped playing for bowling teams more than the fact that they stopped, imo. It describes a symptom more than a problem.

what’s this about? bowling teams ceasing to exist and that being a symptom of american social communities as a whole doing the same?

It's good, read it with Amusing Ourselves (mentioned above) and Coming Apart.

He uses the death of bowling leagues in favor of individual bowling as an example of what he calls social capital (essentially involvement in structured, yet privately operated group activities) declining, which he relates to problems with society and the strength of communities. He has another book where he uses this same frame to analyze what makes italian provinces more or less successful called "making democracy work" which is extremely interesting.

"University"? Yes. "College", if you're American. But "school" No. School is for children.

I don't really remember much of this book but making democracy work is highly data driven. It's more of a case study. Good read.
