Yeah, somewhat. There's definitely research going on regarding rewrite systems and a decent about of research has been done since the 90s at the intersection of group theory, representation theory (of groupds as well as other algebraic objects), and formal languages.

I don't know of much research going on that strictly involve just formal languages. (Similarly I don't know of any research being conducted on, e.g. predicate logic.) I.e. I don't think there are "groundbreaking" unsolved problems and Coke tures in formal language theory (or logic), but theres a decent amount of research going on that applies stuff like abstract algebra to formal languages (and similarly for logic).

I don't know much about combinatorics (always found it dull, although I'm sure it's interesting if approached from the right angle, so to speak), but the impression I get is that combinatorics is in a similar position (and always has been?).

>> No.12206826

>>12206815
I have no idea, about the state of research, but I have heard from many sources that set theory (which I associate with formal languages) is a dead field.

combinatorics is super handy (having a vague grasp on when to use binomials/exponentiation etc.) I found it kind of fun.

I always thought category theory seemed really cool.

Our dear author uses "universal" and then in the very next sentence says "America is where Russia was 100 years ago." Is it universal, or is there a phase difference or something?

I mean one could certainly say that there is an arch to civilization, that Rome in 476 was like France in 1792 or Russia in 1918, a child could grasp that point. But what's this hundred years business, or this "universal" matter?

And I despise sentences like this
>The cultural-psychological reaction to post modern ideas and technology

As if cultural-psychological had an pbvious meaning, as if "post modern ideas and technology" referred to some established and common idea, and not a freakishly specific configuration in the author's mind.

If we want to say "Gee late 19th Russian literature has striking relevance to contemporary America" then why not just say that? And why not say "why is this?" Rather than refer to some highly abstract and deeply ambiguous notion about "universal timelines"? Or say, "America, like dostoevsky's Russia is in an epoch of decline because x,y,z"?

I hate this sort of crypto-pseudo-witticist writing. Tut tut. As if weve got it all figured out and it were only so obvious, and we could roll our eyes at our non-historico-economico-culturo-literate companions.

Now imagine this: a manless voice cries out to you in a dream with dislike, only its not a dream, its anonymous poster on 4chan, dwelling place of the self confessed insignificant, and its not dislike, its a tbumbs down emoji. >Is it universal
There's a phase difference. different countries are at different points on this developmental line (the word time was used because rate is a factor, but yes that seems ambiguous because it invites confounding it with 'the' literal timeline, so I disambiguated with the 'a').
>As if cultural-psychological had an obvious meaning
It's a reference to the shared traits/states (largely mental) a peoples or country will have, like the cloud common to all your devices. for example the american dream, religion, politics, philosophical outlook, repression levels, 'questions of the times', etc. the element: psychology of the set: culture or, 'cultural-psychological'
>post modern ideas and technology
post modern is a predicate of ideas, not technology here. 'Post modern ideas' (and I could have added modernism) is just the existential struggle of subjective values and identity.
